.308 ammo
Hey ya'll,
I'm interested in some .308/7.62x51 ammo. What's the best bang for your buck in the milsurp? I've read that the Indian is poo, and good things about the South African. Any other sources for good quality? About the best prices I've found are around 17 cents per round. Also, as I'll be using some of this stuff to hunt, what about bulk hollowpoints/softpoints? I don't like the idea of an fmj bouncing around while I'm shooting a coyote or pig in amongst my cows? BTW, it's mainly going to be run thru a gas operated semi auto with a 16.5" barrel. Thanks, :eating: beef |
Re: .308 ammo
Dunno about .308, but the South African .223 has never caused me a problem.

I also have a case of the .308 set aside as well. Good stuff. Blasting ammo / shooting critters should be just about anything. If you get some of the battlepacked SA 308 SAVE IT, it's getting scare. I remember telling people to stop using the SA .223 a few years back like it was cheap Isreali surplus but no one listened "I'll use whats cheap" Stupid fu(kers. The stuff is expensive as crap right now if you can even find any. Sorry, but people who treat caching ammo like blasting ammo are fools. |
Re: .308 ammo
So, Prome, you're saying the Indian is ok to burn, just not to cache? I'm interested in both.
Are the prices I mentioned about what you're finding for the battlepacks? :eating: beef |
Re: .308 ammo
Here's a list of surplus 7.62x51 from dealers on the net
http://www.rifle-company.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=431 SA seems to be the best thing going right now. Its fine to use as long as you also keep a case to the side to save for later. Some indian is ok but some lots are very bad(ka-boom). To me its not worth taking the chance when there are good alternatives just to save a few pennies. There is also argentine and some yugo and port out there, latter two on links. polygunbag has yugo in boxes and some bulk soft points. |
Re: .308 ammo
I for one got a bunch of 30-06 blast away ammo from Cheaper Than Dirt but for the real McCoy I keep my Winchester.
I you buy cheap ammo and good one be sure that your last 3-5 shots are with the good ammo in order to keep the weapon tuned for emergency where you would need the good ammo to start with. |
Re: .308 ammo
Indian .308 is a NO-NO,unless you do not value your life or weapon.
There is plenty of info over at www.ar15.com on the dangerous .308 ammo floating around.Go look at the catastrophic effects of the Indian .308 fired through some expensive and now scrap weapons. Any .308 or other military grade ammo, whether new manufacture of surplus, stores very well for decades. Especially if it is american, canada,or australian made due to thier quality control measures. Malaysian surplus is also top quality. If you have the chance to buy any,Tropical ammo, such as Malaysian,It is the best to own for long term storage, due to the the designed use and storage for tropical zones. Remember:Military ammo is made with water proof primers and Bullets seated with a water resistant lube.most civillian ammo is not made in this fashion, and does not store long in humid or wet enviroments. |
Re: .308 ammo
South African is good. Portuguese is good. The Greek M2 ball (30-06) the CMP has is good also. The Indian is hit or miss from what I've beem reading.

Re: .308 ammo
I would think the .308 would be more accurate than the .303. Assuming both were fired thru the appropriate barrel.
These two are NOT interchangeable. The 303 is rimmed, the 308 rimless, for starters. You might be able to interchange the bullet (I don't know), but the cartridges are definitely different. :eating: beef |

Re: .308 ammo
Prom,
You (or anyone else) never said at about what price you're finding the .308. I'm itching to buy some, but I don't want to order any until I have the rifle in my hands. Should be here early next week, but I'm hoping to have it by this weekend. Anyone ever shoot soft points/polymer tips thru a M1A? :eating: beef |
Re: .308 ammo
I'll be at Knob Creek Machine Gun shoot this weekend. I always buy a few K of my favorite Calibers there.
I know I can get plastic cases of SA .308, (IIRC 2400ish rnds) for a good deal. Want some? PM me and I'll call you from the shoot with a price. Speaking of KC. Anyone else going? |

I bought 5 battlepacks (700 rounds) last weekend at the gunshow for 28 bucks each (20 cents a round) from a vendor and he cut a me a deal on a handfull of ammo cans @ 10 bucks for the lot. Just a few shows ago they were 25 bucks each and I balked at them because I hadn't checked the price recently. Since I added a second G3 to my collection I figured I needed to buy more ammo. |

Re: .308 ammo
Wasn't much in the way of deals to be had.
ammunitionstore was there but only had crap 308 left by the time I got to them. I still go to Knob Creek every 6 months to camp and hang out with friends. Yeah commercial and stuff but it's a pretty good central location for a bunch of us to meet up. I've been to Bulletfest before. IV I think. At Snodes Was a good time but a pretty far drive for me. |
Re: .308 ammo
I need to find surplus cases of 7.62 x 54R ammo if anybody knows of a cheap place.

Re: .308 ammo
Curt,
Check that rifle-company link Tinman posted. They have lists for 308 and 30-06, but most of the stores carry 7.62x54 as well. And they're cheap. |
